Minutes to the 02/02/08 & 03/08/08 MDS Meetings

IN ATTENDANCE
In February: Davey, Ruth, Matt, Maggie (remindifying) & Dan (secretarying), though Patrick wandered in later;
In March: Ruth, Erin, Patrick, Maggie (remindifying) & Dan (secretarying), though Vanessa showed up soon after the meeting was called to order, making only her second MDS appearance, and then Davey showed up some time past that.
RESOLUTIONS
- IT IS HEREBY RESOVLED that Dan’s co-worker is an idiot (which one?);
- IT IS HEREBY RESOVLED that THE MASTER & MARGARITA is to be finished by the March 2008 meeting (check!);
- IT IS HEREBY RESOVLED that Jaws is a really long movie;
- IT IS HEREBY RESOVLED that Erin & Ruth enjoy hot, single guys;
- - IT IS HEREBY RESOVLED that Maggie and Dan have the best overall attendance record for MDS since its inception;
- IT IS HEREBY RESOVLED that Vanessa shall take the position of MDS’s Bureaucrat while Davey will set up MDS’s Black Ops Committee;
- IT IS HEREBY RESOVLED that the next book shall be Graham Greene’s The Third Man, with a meeting time TBD.
These deals are just too good to pass up!
- February’s meeting begins with the radical assertion that the Devil isn’t reliable – if I was looking for this kind of insight, I would have asked someone in high school;
- Since the Master comes off as a miserable sod, everyone wonders why Margarita is so much in love with him – while he might make her happy, is that enough to warrant making a deal with the Devil?
- We ponder whether the eventual end will make any sense (spoiler alert! no, it will not);
- Satan’s Ball doesn’t seem to add much to the story, other than to flesh out Margarita (get it! zing!!);
- Satan’s Ball does seem pretty cinematic, however, and should THE MASTER & MARGARITA be made into a movie, surely, it would be shown in 3-D;
- The meeting was adjourned at 5:50pm, after which dinner was enjoyed at Honey 1 BBQ.
- March’s meeting begins with Ruth telling everyone about her wonderful week, causing Dan to resent her and the week Ruth has had;
- It is thought that though God calls the shots, and the Devil can’t say no to Him, if the Devil could say no, however, he would do so with great sass;
- Behemoth’s last adventure in Moscow with Koroviev was GREAT, and would make for great film (Erin to write the screenplay);
- Contrary to popular belief, and despite the obvious chronological difficulties, THE MASTER & MARGARITA is based on All Dogs Go To Heaven, as indicated when the Master and Margarita walk into the light, much as all dogs do when they go to heaven;
- Maggie reveals that she loves easy lovers;
- While it should be considered on a case by case basis, a general rule of thumb for life is to just do what the Devil says – this was often the only option for people in option-strapped Communist Russia, strangely enough;
- The suggestion is made that Dan is twee, though no vote is taken and the resolution did not pass;
- Having discerned Bulgakov’s point (i.e. that we should do what the Devil says), we moved on to new book ideas, bucking the idea that MDS ends with the onset of Spring. These included, but were not limited to, I, CLAUDIUS, THE KNOWN WORLD, YIDDISH POLICEMAN’S UNION; TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE; something by John Grisham. However, Chabon did something to Davey in his younger days, so his book was out, and Dan pooh-pooh’d THE KNOWN WORLD as being too long, the TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE never really had a chance, really, since it’s just chick-lit, and in the end, THE THIRD MAN came from the back of the pack to be the winner. Also, the movie based on the short story is awesome, and will look especially awesome on Maggie’s big tv;
- Having thus completed our business with THE MASTER & MARGARITA, MDS adjourned at 6:02 and the group's best intentions notwithstanding, we'll see you next year.
