Minutes to the 03/24/07 MDS Meeting
An excerpt from the epic, "We Are the Band":
The meeting didn't make much more sense than this excerpt. Quite frankly, the MDS took arm against Faulkner, and we lost. His meandering text bested our spirits, bested our sunny dispositions, bested our patience and defeated us in this battle of attrition. It was foregone that we would lose this battle, honestly, and we were fools to ever believe otherwise. While we once shared that fleeting optimism of the flutes and woodwinds -- that we could, indeed, "soar to the top" -- it was crushed, stamped out, forcibly stolen from us, like we were victims of the Count Rugen's nefarious torture device.
It was a close call, and we were lucky to walk away from this book alive and well. Our thoughts and prayers go to those brave members of MDS who were not so lucky.
IN ATTENDANCE
Liz (presiding), Dan (secretarying), Maggie (remindifying), Brian, Erin, Jenny (commencifying live) and Irina.
RESOLUTIONS
- IT IS HEREBY RESOVLED that no one liked the book;
- IT IS HEREBY RESOVLED that Dan has never worked in a retirement community ;
- IT IS HEREBY RESOVLED that Truman Capote was a guy who could really write a book;
- IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that the MDS officially spent more time discussing the book than Faulkner spent working on it;
- IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that Hillary Swank may actually be the Anti-Christ;
- IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that discussions are underway regarding the next book (discussions now moot since Gilead was chosen, and most people have already finished it.
Ring the bell 18 times for the fallen!
- Liz followed up with an assignment, and read up on Exodus. Conclusion: there are parallels between Exodus and The Unvanquished. Further details were not given;
- except for this detail -- the chosen people didn't do anything wrong, they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, and were punished for it, just like the plumbers on the Death Star;
- also, the river didn't open for the slaves as the Red Sea did for the Jews, so... there you go;
- Baird was girl crazy, and as the book came to a close, his love with Drusilla was in question;
- the wedding scene was weird, as if Faulkner was daring us to stop reading (it nearly worked, too).

We are the band with an awesome sound/
Flutes and woodwinds understand, they'll soar to the top of the band.
