And... breathe

After months of anticipation, the OC has finally returned. Or so I am told. I have been busy keeping up with the election. I was decidedly pro-Kerry, so maybe I would have been better served to read up on the new season of The OC rather than the election.

I like to think that I did my part this year, and then some. I voted, and I even read up on all the judicial nominees, so that no crap judge would remain. I actually never bothered to look up and see if the judges that were deemed unfit made it back onto the bench. Just goes to show you how far my interest ended up taking me...

but really, I was too busy trying to figure out What Went Wrong. At first, I blamed it on Diebold, Inc. Hell, I still do, who am I kidding? Then it became those evangelicals, what with their Guns Gays & Abortion motto. And in that light, I did find a significant amount of solace. After all, how could I blame Kerry and the Democratic Party when they were facing that kind of an idealogical triumverate? But could the idea of two men kissing one another exclusively and with the full legal benefits that that carries be enough to move 59 million people to vote for Bush? No, I have to say no.

A point was made, however, that while those voting for Bush weren't gay-hating, gun-toting God-lovers, the fact is that the ticket for which they voted most certainly is. And for that, we can hold their feet to the fire if/when the country goes yet further down those tubes.

but I'm getting ahead of myself. Back to why Kerry lost. Truthfully, I don't know. Maybe I'm jsut too idealogically opposed to Bush, such that I can't understand why anyone would pick him over Kerry. Excepting, though, for those that voted on Guns Gays & Abortions. I mean, I feel like I can understand a single-issue voter far better than a run-of-the-mill moderate, who looked at the big picture when punching the hole for Bush/Cheney. Of course, maybe they though that they were voting for Kerry/Edwards (see again: sneaking suspicion of voter fraud). But all of this is mostly hogwash - Bush won. Again. And so we can only but move on.

While I do have a nagging fear that we're due for another terrorist attack - not that I could even say why, and I certainly don't mean to imply that I would ever invite one, but, you know - or that the rest of the world will decide that we're not going to make such a good investment in the long run, and so there they go dumping their US assets, plunging us into economic dissarry. I guess if there's one field where disaster can provide a boon, it would be the law. When every other country goes bankrupt, who's going to make all those labels?

Mostly, though, keep in mind that for a while, when I was much younger, I was afraid to use toilet paper in public for fear that it was laced with LSD. as I once said, about a year ago in an early, early post - I am neurotic.

So discounting something like that, what will four more years of Bush bring? a radical Supreme Court? I can't see anyone passing the Senate that would really upset things. A federal ban on gay marriage? Again, doubtful in that it truly represents one of the most blatantly regressive laws in this country. A new Social Security program? again, i doubt it. I think it'll be a lot of failed accomplishments, much like Bush's first term. While he has the benefit of a larger win this time around, he also has the handicap of having shown an utter and complete contempt for a putting in a decent job as President of the United States of America. Will enough Congressmen, who do have to worry about re-election, blindly put up with his shit, only to be the ones to shoulder the blame when their own day of electoral reckoning draws near? For some, sure they will. But not enough.

What's strangest for me is that for a long, long time, all I did was think about politics. I read up on it throughout each and every day. If the refresh button were a real, physical button, it would have worn out long ago. And while politics, in general, will continue onwards through the run-up to the 2006 election, will my interest keep pace? Eh. What else am I going to do, star writing slash stories based on the OC? Yeah, I didn't think so.

Like Kyle said in the new Detractor editorial (and indeed, don't stop with the editorial, but be sure to read the whole thing), as long as there's a horse-race going, we might as well have our own favorite to win it.

You know, come 2008, you know what I think? Christ for President. Yeah, you know.
