Set phasers to stun
I had a moment at work yesterday that truly gave me pause. Like, I was doing my assignment, and I just had to stop for a minute, to reflect on what, precisely, I was doing.
I shouldn't give such a set up - the punchline, as usual, will only be a let down. But anyway, my particular task wasn't anything that different from what I normally do. It was a mindless, droll, empty task. I've been doing them for 11 months now, so why was this task on Thursday morning different?
For the first time, and I mean truly for the first time ever, I was able to do my job with my eyes closed. I was updating a database, which meant I clicked my mouse to advance to the next record, and then I would hit CNTRL + V to paste the new data where it belongs. Click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... and then it was sometime at this point that I realized that I could do this with my eyes closed. And so in the interest of doing something novel and different, to change up my rote and otherwise predictable job, I closed me eyes, and continued along with click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V... click, CNTRL + V...
finally even, this got old, and I went back to just clicking away with my eyes open. I could feel the rush of adrenaline already easing off, my flirtation with dangerously reckless database-updating getting too hot for my own good. I had to cool down and get my head on straight, since, after all, my job is important, and I make one mistake, then... hell, then the entire office would crumble around my very feet. That, at least, is the impression that my boss sometimes gives me anyway.
But I digress.
Lest I make a mistake while updating the database, like I said, I felt the need to cool off. So I took a walk around my floor, to clear my head. Do a few breathing exercises, some air punches - you know, the usual.
fuck, that's not true at all, the clearing my head part. While I did, for a brief few minutes, enjoy a sort of giddy satisfaction with myself for taking the opportunity to do my job with my eyes closed, the novelty did wear off, and the crushing weight of my job's sucktitude bested me once again. Besides, there were labels to be made ASAP and... well, yeah.
